This is considered the most challenging task: rephrase the sentence using a word given which you cannot change.
You may receive 2 marks per answer.
The idea is simple: The task gives you a sentence with a few words missing and you have to decide what words complete the sentence.
There is a sample sentence above and your sentence must have the same meaning as the first sentence.
They give you 1 word that you must use in your sentence, and you cannot change this word.
This word will often help you decide which other words you need to use.
However, there is a technique that will help you out a lot!
- Cross out any part in the first sentence that is duplicated in the second sentence, for example:
25Ihad nevervisitedacitythatwassobigbefore.
VISIT
It was my……………………………………………… big city. What do we have left?
had never – a- that – so (+ adjective) – before + the word given: visit
- Now we can figure out what we need to focus on when we rewrite.
Let’s put the left-over words together:
A. had never before
B. Visit
C. A
D. that so (adjective)Apply logic. What does had never before refer to? A first time, right?
So, we can transform it to: first visit.
If we complete the sentence now, we have: it was my first visit / big city.
Of course, we add “a” to make “a big city”.
And then we also have to use a preposition to connect the noun to the action: to.But we still have something to ADD!
When do we use so + adjective? to emphasize, right? The city was SO BIG!
But we can’t add “so”…. what modifier do we use to replace “so” when we say “a big thing“.
Did you say such? Then you have the right answer.
This is how you do this exercise. Now, you try!
